Neva Kittrell Scheve (Trailer & Tow Vehicle Maintenance) – has authored three books on horse trailering: Horse Trailering on the Road, Equine Emergencies on the Road (with James Hamilton, DVM), and the nationally accepted text book on horse trailers The Complete Guide to Buying, Maintaining, and Servicing a Horse Trailer, published by Howell publishing. Her life long commitment in promoting safety in horse trailers has also kept her busy continually writing articles in national horse publications, along with her husband Tom.
In 2006 alone, they have written Higher Horse Trailer Standards, Practical Horseman February 2006, Tow Vehicle Math Made Easy, Practical Horseman July 2006, and Tow Like A Pro, Equus September 2006. Also, in 2006, they have been interviewed for safety information by The Horse, Horse Illustrated, Trail Rider Magazine, and Acreage Magazine. They are also one of the few, if any, that have been recognized for their safety efforts by an independent rating source. In 1996, their trailer design was voted #1 in safety (Mike Plumb's Journal).
Neva has designed horse trailers for manufacturers such as McQuerry, Merhow, Hawk, and Trail-et. She was the first to design a straight load trailer (1987) that utilized a standard 6'8" interior width (using 102" axles), along with a 7'6" interior height to accommodate warmblood horses (EquiSport). Other unique designs include being the designer and creator of the new three horse straight load/diagonal trailer (2001) which many manufacturers are just now starting to introduce into their product lines. Currently, Neva does all the design and product development for EquiBuilt, which along with husband Tom, and in alliance with Trail-et Manufacturing, is the manufacturing arm of EquiSpirit Trailers. Says Neva, "You can't write about horse trailers and horse trailer safety without constantly putting it to the test. EquiSpirit allows us to do just that."
During her 42 year involvement with horses, she has competed in hunter jumping, three day eventing, dressage riding, and carriage driving. Besides writing, she has given horse trailer seminars at national events such as Horse World Expo, Equitana USA, Equine Affair, the national Pony Club Annual meeting, Pony Club Festival, NTRA, and others. She was instrumental in developing the Moore County Equine Emergency Response Unit and has also been an active member of the Veterinary Medical Assistance Team (VMAT), which is affiliated with the AVMA and FEMA. She has participated in search and rescues all along the Eastern Coast. To help assist in large animal rescue, Neva developed an Equine Ambulatory Unit that was successfully used in aiding and rescuing horses during the disastrous flooding from hurricane Floyd that happened in eastern North Carolina during October of 1999.
